D#3, HW#3, The Writer's Place
The reason I chose the topic of abstinence-only sex education is because I am greatly opposed to it. I lived in Gilbert, AZ and went to Highland High school; our sex education was a week long course during driver's ed that had one message... NO SEX UNTIL MARRIAGE! If you have sex before that time you will contract an STD and die. I mean seriously! If that was the reality of it the world would not be populated by many. But in all seriousness that is what I was taught and it was so unrealistic and non-educational. As you grow up you learn about the facts of sex whether you want to or not and most teens have to find out the hard way because they were never taught anything. I have been fortunate enough to ask questions or find out what I need to know about sex if I got curious, but most teens don't. Most teens go through an abstinence only class and then don't know about the resources offered to them if they do have sex; such as condoms, the morning after pill, etc. I think this is a very important issue and I am excited to conduct more research so that when this topic comes up in everyday conversation I can have legitimate intelligent things to say, rather than just my opinion.

I also grew up in Gilbert and know exactly what you are talking about. Driver's ed wasn't even required at my school, so only about half the students take the class and learn about sex-ed. Your research sounds interesting.
I don't think we even had a sex-ed class in high school. Kids today are doing things at a much younger age so they need to know what they are getting themselves into before they actually do it. I also think parents are not doing a good enough job and it is falling into the hands of the schools. Teachers are not sure what they are supposed to do or say to their students. I think it is only going to get worse because what is a mother going to tell her daughter who is only fifteen years younger than her? We now have children raising children.
I really understand what you want to say. I grew up in Japan and even I never had any sex education class in my life. Yes! That is why so many young kids learn the hard way. Not enough sex-education causes young kids to get pregnat and go through abortions. That is a serious problem in my country.
Your research topic is really interesting to me!!
